Ossian at Swayambu

AA160515-Ossianspace-t

A filmmaker and friend Thomas Anderson commissioned this small work to be a souvenir and portrait of the western boy who became a Tibetan Tolku. Thomas made a film called Ossian which was shown on PBS TV.

Ossian begged his mother to move into the monastery to become a monk. She was open to it if she could live nearby, which she did. The boy named Ossian is standing in the front of the picture. In back are his friend and his teacher, with Swayambhu temple in back.

Anointed by his devoutly Buddhist parents as a candidate for monkhood, the film shows Ossian’s initiation into the order, counterbalanced with shots of this otherwise very typical American kid. The practice of consigning very young children to a lifetime of service to Buddha has come under fire in recent years.
